Have you heard that Beyond King Tut: The Immersive Experience is now at the National Geographic Museum in Washington, D.C.? I visited with my family a few days ago. I'd never been to an immersive exhibit before. I'm excited to tell you about our visit!

The author and his family received complimentary tickets in exchange for this article. All thoughts and opinions expressed are his own.

On our car ride there, my parents shared some "fun facts" about King Tut with my brother and me. Here's what we learned:

  • When King Tut became "Pharaoh of Egypt," he was just 9 years old! Because he was so young, he was called the “boy king.”
  • When he died, he was only 19 years old. He was buried in an underground grave called a tomb.
  • Ancient Egyptians believed in life after death. Items that would be needed in the afterlife were placed the tomb along with the body.
  • The reason why King Tut is so famous is because his tomb was one of the few tombs that had not been robbed when it was discovered. It was filled with amazing treasures that were more than 3000 years old!
  • This year is the 100th anniversary of the discovery of King Tut’s tomb!

I thought the exhibit was really cool. Here are some things I especially loved:

  • That it felt like a virtual reality experience because all of the walls and floors were covered with enormous video screens – it seemed real!
  • The part of the exhibit where they explained step-by-step how King Tut was made into a mummy and placed in his tomb, like how they removed his organs and stuff.
  • That the exhibit went through all of the stages of King Tut's afterlife, with really amazing pictures.

My 5-year-old brother liked all the gods and how they they made it look like water turned into fire.

Here's my dad's feedback: While there is a fair amount of reading throughout the exhibit, the same information is conveyed in a captivating immersive experience. So whether you are a visual or auditory learner, you can easily understand the content of the exhibit. The visual aspect really makes the exhibit child-friendly as well.

My mom, dad, brother and I had fun at Beyond King Tut: The Immersive Experience – and we learned a lot also!
