Wegmans Meals 2GO

A Family Dinner Solution For Busy Families

By Kathryn Fisher, Bowie Macaroni Kid December 23, 2019

Let's take a minute and be honest with ourselves, cooking dinner night after night is hard work.  Cooking dinner that everyone will eat, another challenge.  Getting dinner on the table and everyone fed in time to go about the evenings activities, well perfect trifecta of a night.  It's hard work.  So, occasionally we need help and that is okay.  The struggle for myself, as a single parent with three kids ranging from three to eight years old is that everyone always wants something different.  So, what should be easy for me becomes a stressful battle of who gets to choose where we eat and deal with the complaints from at least two out of three kids.  Doesn't sound all that relaxing does it?

Odds are if you've shopped at Wegmans for your groceries before you know about their coveted hot bar, salad bar, soup station, sushi bar, pizza oven and more in that one section of the store, complete with soda fountains, dining room tables, cutlery and single serving desserts from the bakery.  After weekly grocery shopping my kids will beg to get something to eat, usually I say no (I know, I know... mean mom alert 🚨) but we've just bought a cart full of food for the week and I believe, well my wallet believes, in eating out only when necessary.  Needless to say, when I heard about the Wegmans Meals2GO app, I downloaded it out of curiosity and took a peek. It was all the favorites from their ready to go section of the store that my kids beg to eat. Hold up, we might have a dining out winner on our hands.

I picked a busy night of the week, for us it's Tuesday, packed full of dance for all three kids, two cities over, then back to cub scouts for two of the kids one more city over. Typically I pack dinner and the kids will eat in the dance studio dining room but this seemed like a great chance to give the app a try. I opened it up when the kids got off the school bus and one by one they navigated it and placed their order.  Mason, age 8, picked a medium cheese pizza (6 slices) because in his mind a small wouldn't be big enough (spoiler alert: he had two slices left). Lillian, age 5, picked sushi, shrimp tempura. Abigail, age 3, picked chicken wings with ranch dipping sauce. Ordering took under five minutes for all three kids. The addition of pictures of each food item to their menu on the app made for an easy ordering experience. If your kids are anything like mine, they need that visual aide because you say ravioli (an option on the app) and they will look at you as if they have no idea what ravioli is even if they ate it the night before. Once we finished our order, we selected the method of delivery. You can choose, at most locations, carryout, curbside and delivery (within certain radius). We opted for the curbside because it was raining and I did not want to get three kids out of the car, and if they offer the convenience I am going to take advantage of it, with pleasure. Then our time for pickup is input. Lastly your payment, you can choose Apple Pay or pay with a credit card. This can be saved to your account if you create one or you can order and checkout as a guest. Our order was placed and we were on our way.

When we arrived at our local Wegmans, the signage made it clear on where we should go. We selected a Meals2GO parking space and followed the instructions on the sign: a simple text letting them know we had arrived and our meal could be brought out when ready. A return text came through immediately letting me know that our text had been received and that our order would be out shortly. After a few minutes, out came an employee with a cart holding our order. He handed over 4 bags and a pizza and even asked that I check the pizza to ensure it was cooked to our liking, talk about service! Each meal was individually packed with all the condiments, cutlery, and of course napkins. The last bag contained our drinks, keeping them nice and cold.

It's raining... who wants to get three kids out of the car for anything you don't have to?
Send a text, get a reply, minutes later... food arrives!

I handed out the kids dinner, pizza for Mason, sushi for Lily, chicken wings for Abby, and they all started eating before we were out of the parking lot. By the time we arrived at dance, they had finished their meals, placed their trash bag in the heavy duty paper bags their meals came in, wiped their hands off and were ready for the evening full of activities. No mom guilt was had for choosing this time saving, no line waiting, freshly prepared dinner option for my family. If you know your life is going to take a busy turn you can even order up to a week in advance!

While this was a solution for a busy mom on a busy night, the opportunities are plentiful.  Have a friend who is sick and you want to show them you care?  Send their family dinner and them some delicious soup, the chicken noodle is always a hit or the organic butternut squash and apple bisque I had last night really hits the spot! This is now an option using Wegmans Meals2GO delivery. Planning a gathering and want some sushi platters? No need to go to the store to place your order, just use the Wegmans Meals2GO app and order (up to a week in advance) and make your selections there. Friday night sleepover and a house full of kids, place your order for pizzas on the app and swing by the store to pickup, or again, have it delivered!

Peaceful dinner of Organic Butternut Squash and Apple Bisque still hot and delicious while my children are already fed and in dance class.
